Odin's Hoard: Unlocking a 30-Year Dream in Durham | Collectibles & Community (2026)

Odin's Hoard, a new collectibles shop in Durham, is a testament to the power of passion and community. It's a place where nostalgia and imagination intertwine, offering a unique shopping experience that goes beyond mere retail. This article delves into the story behind Odin's Hoard, exploring the vision and dedication of its owner, Benn Clarkson, and how it has become a destination for collectors and fans alike.

A Lifetime of Collecting

Benn Clarkson's journey into the world of collectibles began in his youth in County Durham. The Durham Miners' Gala of the 1990s sparked a lifelong fascination with finding unique items to bring home. This early interest laid the foundation for his eventual dream of opening a shop dedicated to the same passion.

"It’s an idea that’s been 30 years in my head," Clarkson said. "I just thought if I don’t do it now, I’ll regret it – so I’ve just gone and done it."

A Shop Like No Other

Odin's Hoard, located in the heart of Durham's Prince Bishops Place, offers a wide range of popular collectible brands, including Funko, Loungefly, NECA, and Mezco Toys, alongside merchandise inspired by Marvel, DC, and Disney. However, Clarkson emphasizes that the shop is more than just a collection of products.

"The idea of the shop is to sell what people want, not necessarily what they need," he said. "People come into the shop – some will walk in and walk out because it’s not for them. Some people walk in and scrutinise every corner. That’s what I really want. I wanted people to find things that they imagine. It’s their imagination that I want to satiate."

The shop's layout and atmosphere are designed to encourage exploration and discovery. Clarkson wants customers to engage with the products and let their imaginations run wild.

A Community Hub

Since opening just a few weeks ago, Odin's Hoard has become a hub for collectors and fans. The store attracts a mix of curious passers-by and dedicated collectors, with new stock arriving regularly to keep the offering fresh. Clarkson is also keen to involve customers in shaping the business's future.

"We’re listening to what people want," he said. "That’s a big part of it."

The shop has already begun introducing new ideas, such as the possibility of stocking comic books, based on customer feedback. This interactive approach to retail is a key part of Clarkson's vision for Odin's Hoard.

Overcoming Challenges

Launching a new retail business, especially in the current financial climate, comes with its challenges. However, Clarkson remains focused on making the most of the opportunity.

"I know times are tough and people are struggling," he said. "But I’m going to try and enjoy it."

Despite the obstacles, Clarkson's passion and dedication have paid off. Odin's Hoard has become a destination for collectors and fans across the region, and Clarkson is inviting others to step inside and discover the wonders within.

A Milestone Achieved

For Clarkson, opening the doors of Odin's Hoard has marked a major milestone. After three decades of imagining what such a shop could be, he is now inviting others to step inside and experience it for themselves.

Odin's Hoard is located at High Street, Prince Bishops Place in Durham city centre and is open from 10 am to 5 pm Monday to Saturday, and 10:30 am to 4 pm on Sundays.
