Neither the Blue Moon nor Starship flying on this mission will be their final, landing-capable versions. Blue Origin's Blue Moon Mark 2, an advanced version of the Mk1 cargo lander, will be launched, and SpaceX's Starship will undergo similar testing.
Demonstrating Lunar Landing Capabilities
For NASA to certify these vehicles for lunar landings, they must meet a list of stringent requirements. A critical milestone is the successful demonstration of an uncrewed lunar landing. Both SpaceX and Blue Origin are committed to aggressive objectives and goals to ensure understanding and confidence in their spacecraft and launch vehicles before a crewed landing.
Testing Spacesuits and Interoperability
Once Orion docks with Blue Moon, two astronauts will board the lander to test its environmental control systems and avionics. A test EVA spacesuit, designed to mirror future lunar surface excursions, will launch aboard Blue Moon, providing engineers with valuable data on suit-cabin interactions.
Starship's Role
Starship will launch after Orion and Blue Moon have undocked. Currently under construction on Florida's Space Coast, Starship is designed to be fully reusable and will provide a significant upgrade from SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket.
Starship's V3 upgrade includes hardware necessary for a moon landing mission, such as docking ports for propellant transfers in space. NASA estimates that at least 15 Starship refueling launches will be required for the Artemis IV mission.
Mission Conclusion and Future Plans
After a day of docking with Starship, Orion and the Artemis III crew will prepare for their return to Earth, targeting a parachute-assisted splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.
Successful operations with both landers on Artemis III will pave the way for NASA's lunar landing plans on Artemis IV, currently scheduled for 2028. Starship, selected by NASA for this mission, will carry astronauts to the Moon's surface, marking a historic return after more than half a century.
